Our Research Program

Teaming up with leading eye care companies to bring new products to market is an integral part of the Sacco Eye Group.  It has become a large enough portion of our practice that it now stands apart due to the nature of the work we perform as Sacco Eye Group: Ophthalmic Research.  Thank you for visiting our website devoted to this mission.

We have worked hard to be leaders in our profession and are extremely busy helping pharmaceutical and contact lens companies develop new products.   We have always believed that the best patient care comes from the best clinical science as a foundation.  Going back almost twenty years we have been involved in clinical trials, studies, and product development in the field of eye care.  This includes contact lens designs, contact lens solutions, contact lens materials, medications and some medical devices.  We think you’ll find few practices with our credentials and pedigree and insight into evolving technology.

While we are not permitted to openly discuss the nature of our current studies and trials due to confidentiality agreements, we have listed some of our recent studies and accomplishments on our completed studies link.  We are proud to have helped develop and test the AcuVue™ Bifocal contact lens and the RevEyes™ solution to help reverse pupillary dilation.  This past year we played a key role in helping develop a new silicone soft lens from a major manufacturer (not to market yet), and helped with the refinement of the new Purevision 2™ contact lens from Bausch and Lomb.   We played an integral part in post marketing work for the new Bausch and Lomb Fresh™ disinfecting solution, as well as being an investigational site selected to help develop the new Biotrue™ solution from Bausch and Lomb.  In addition our work helped identify patient comfort preferences as it related to contact lens solutions, and that work was published in Clinical Ophthalmology 2010:4.   In January 2011, Dr. Sacco presented a scientific poster at the Global Specialty Lens Symposium discussing corneal complications from contact lens and solution interactions.  Dr. Sacco also participated on a specially convened panel, the Corneal Infiltrate Advisory Panel, which helped identify a new clinical condition- contact lens associated infiltrative keratitis (CLAIK).  Subsequent to this work, Dr. Sacco authored an article in a recent issue of Contact Lens Spectrum discussing CLAIK and its diagnosis and treatment.

The practice has done work with Regional Clinical Research, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Alcon, Bausch and Lomb, Cibavision and Johnson & Johnson/Vistakon.  Dr. Sacco is a consultant to Bausch and Lomb, and has been on the medical advisory panels for Inspire Pharmaceuticals and Allergan.  Dr. Sacco currently functions as the director of the research program and Staci Sacco is the clinical research coordinator.
